3. Convenience:

•    Simply add 1 tsp. to a bottle of water, shake, and enjoy a delicious green tea beverage to keep you focused and energetic at work, at the gym, or wherever you are.

4. Beauty and Uniqueness:

Matcha has a very high concentration of the catechin EGCG, in fact Living Qi organic matcha was measured to have about 66mg per gram of matcha. When you combine the health benefits of EGCG with the high chlorophyll content of matcha and the natural fiber that occurs by ingesting the entire tea leaf, you have an amazing healing herb. ECGC has been researched extensively as a prevention against cancer. The role of EGCG in cancer prevention is very detailed biochemically, but I want to give you a brief idea of how EGCG inhibits carcinogenesis. The following is reprinted form Cancer Prevention Research:

EGCG interacts with and binds numerous proteins to prevent carcinogenesis. EGCG has been reported to directly bind with the plasma proteins fibronectin, fibrinogen and histidine-rich glycoprotein, Fas, laminin and the 67 kDa laminin receptor, vimentin ZAP-70, Fyn, insulin-line growth factor-I receptor (IGF-IR), and glucose-regulated protein 78 (GRP-78; solid arrows). EGCG also indirectly targets a number of other oncogenic proteins including EGFR and the activator protein 1 (AP-1), signal transducers and activators of transcription (STAT), and nuclear factor κB (NF-κB) transcription factors. The net result is the inhibition of carcinogenesis in a variety of tissues.(1)

The health benefits of matcha are truly astonishing and one of the most important health characteristics of matcha is the high levels of catechin contained in the the powdered green tea. EGCG, or epigallocatechin gallate, is one of the most widely researched catechin components in green tea. The amount of EGCG will naturally vary depending on the quality of the green tea. Living Qi matcha has the highest concentration of EGCG per gram of any tea measured to date. One gram of Living Qi matcha has about 66mg of EGCG. Even if you take concentrated extracts you will usually have to take at least 2 or more tablets to get the same amount of EGCG found in one serving of Living Qi matcha. Plus, our matcha is certified USDA organic which assures the purity of the farm and soil where the plants are grown.

EGCG has profound health benefits, as the catechin has been studied and used in cancer treatment, weight loss programs, diabetes cases just to name a few. As the health benefits of matcha continue to come to light, getting your daily dose of EGCG certainly can have a great health effect, and is one of the reasons why the ancient masters of longevity used green tea daily.

EGCG has been shown in research studies to have a beneficial effect on these conditions:

Obesity

Cancer

Infection

Diabetes

Prostate Cancer

Alzheimer’s

Aging (via anti-oxidants)

I just read a really interesting interview with Walter Crinnion N.D., in the latest issue of Vitamin Retailer magazine. Dr. Crinnion graduated from my alma mater, Bastyr University, in 1982 and is a leader in the field of Environmental Medicine. He is professor and chair of the Environmental Medicine Department at the Southwest College of Naturopathic Medicine and is a best-selling author. In his latest book: Clean, Green and Lean, Dr. Crinnion addresses the issue of detoxification. It is a profound and intelligent book drawing on the best research available on the subject.

In the Vitamin Retailer interview, Dr. Crinnion cites the top 3 components that research has proven will increase the amount of toxins you eliminate, rather than store in fat tissue. They are:

1) Rice Bran Fiber: either from eating brown rice or from a supplement.

2) Chlorophyll: either from supplements or from green foods.

3) Green Tea: Dr. Crinnion recommends 2 20 oz. cups of green tea per day.

Now, here is the thing about using matcha green tea instead of regular green tea for detoxifying and purifying the body;

1) Matcha green tea is powdered green tea which means you get the fiber from the green tea leaf, which means that you get the health benefits of Dr. Crinnion’s first recommendation for detoxification: fiber.

2) Matcha green tea is super abundant in chlorophyll, in fact, matcha is much more abundant in chlorophyll than traditional green teas because of the shade growing process that drives more of it into the spring tea leaves.

3) Matcha green tea has 10 times the nutrition of regular green tea because of the growing and harvesting process and because you consume the entire leaf.

So if you are interested in detoxification and purification of the body for the health benefits, for weight loss, for regulating blood sugar or cravings, then matcha green tea is extremely beneficial.

Matcha green tea consumption covers all the bases of Dr. Crinnion’s top 3 recommendations for natural foods that help the body eliminate toxins. And when toxins are eliminated from the body, the mitochondria function better and you will lose unnecessary weight while rapidly gaining energy.

Not only this, the antioxidant content of matcha green tea, particularly EGCG, is so high, that it supports the formation of pro-oxidants. Antioxidants protect the mitochondria and allow them to produce both ATP and pro-oxidants, setting up a beneficial feedback loop of fat burning and toxin clearing leading to more energy and vitality.

Thus, the health benefits of matcha are truly remarkable and matcha can be used successfully in any detoxification, weight loss or purification protocol.

I have found that an integral strategy for anxiety is best.. the opposite of integral is a pharmaceutical approach, which is linear. Not that drugs can’t help, they often do, but integral strategies hit the problem from multiple angles, because anxiety usually has multiple causes. All of the keys tie into each other and are integrated into a feedback loop of health:

7 Tips for Erasing Anxiety

The Keys:

1) Meditation:

* Simply taking 15 minutes, in a quiet place, to breath slowly and to ask yourself the question: “Does this anxiety serve me?” will help. Often the body is in a physiological habit of feeling anxious and that does not serve our health and well being. In some cases we are experiencing “good stress”, as in challenging ourselves to grow. I used to dislike public speaking and felt anxious about it…it was good stress for me because I learned to overcome it and I grew as a result. Learn through reflection and meditation how to distinguish between good and bad stress.

2) Oxygenation (when the blood is well oxygenated, the heart works less)

* Exercise: walking, swimming, raquet sports, yoga, tai chi, qigong etc.
* Deep breathing: 10 minute deep breathing sessions throughout the day, even just taking 12 deep breaths will change your state.
* Movement will oxygenate your blood and circulate your energy greatly reducing anxiety.

3) Food choices (less acidic foods, eat more alkaline rich foods (fruits and veggies). This ties into #2 because with the right food, your blood will be well oxygenated.

* If anxiousness is a problem temporarily eliminate sugar and caffeine from the diet. If you are addicted to coffee, take a break from it and try something relaxing like our matcha green tea.

To learn more about feeling relaxed with matcha green tea, go here.

4) Detoxing the liver:

* if you have not tried our 3 week detox program I highly recommend it, people lose weight and report amazing changes in their emotional states.

To learn more about detoxing and purifying your body and for strategies on developing your inner coach check out this free video and article.

5) Sleep:

* Getting in bed early will recharge your adrenal glands, often stress and anxiety is a direct result of the adrenal glands being weak, or producing too much adrenaline.
* The Chinese have a saying “One hour of sleep before midnight is worth two hours after midnight.” Getting to bed early recharges you and reduces stress.

6) Being in nature:

* research shows being in nature, and taking walks in nature lowers blood pressure and reduce stress.

7) Minerals and electrolytes:

* Often a whole food multi-vitamin and mineral formula can help..as does taking extra magnesium, which has been shown to relax blood vessels.

This should get you started, let me know if I can help. If you want a more detailed analysis of your health condition and are not able to come into the clinic to see me personally, go to my website and purchase the online consultation: normally $199, now $99 you save $100. www.blueridgeclinic.com

What I would Tell Oprah about the Amazing Health Benefits of Matcha Green Tea

After treating thousands of patients, you begin to see patterns. You begin to understand what works and what doesn’t. I have seen weight loss fads come and go and I have seen patients try every best selling weight loss plan on the market. Because I love to help people attain lasting positive changes in their lives, when I find an amazing product I like to tell people about it. Matcha green tea has hundreds of beneficial healing characteristics that go way beyond weight loss. And matcha is definitely gaining in popularity. Matcha has been featured on the Dr. OZ show, not only by Dan Buettner, author of Blue Zones, but also in the Dr. OZ cancer edition. Dr. Andrew Weil is also a fan of matcha green tea as he knows of it’s amazing health benefits. While I am somewhat surprised that Oprah has not featured matcha on her show yet, I feel it is just a matter of time before Oprah understands what these other health gurus understand. If Oprah asked me about the health benefits of matcha and why she should drink a cup of matcha a day here is what I would tell her.

1) The health benefits of matcha green tea are very profound, with an ORAC value of 1384, matcha is higher in anti-oxidants than wolfberries, noni and acai juice.
2) 1 cup of Living Qi organic matcha has the anti-oxidants of 137 cups of Chinese green tea tips.
3) Matcha has been shown to help increase metabolism and burn fat.
4) Matcha can help control sugar cravings and reduce blood.
5) Matcha is powdered green tea and green tea is the most researched herb in the world for cancer prevention.
6) Matcha can be made in the traditional way as a hot tea, or made into a delicious matcha latte, or matcha mocha latte

To learn more about why we at Living Qi want Oprah to try our Living Qi organic matcha, simply go here: Why Matcha?

The key to making a matcha mocha latte that tastes like you bought it in a gourmet coffee shop is to make the matcha first, add the creamed chocolate, then add the hot milk and foam.

1)    Add 1 tsp. Living Qi Matcha into your favorite mug
2)    Cream the matcha by adding 2 oz hot water and whisking until smooth and creamy
3)    Cream the chocolate by adding 1 tsp. organic cocoa powder to 2oz. hot water and beating.
4)    Pour 5 oz steamed* milk into your favorite matcha bowl or teacup
5)    Add the “creamed” matcha tea and “creamed” chocolate to the milk
6)    Scoop foamy milk on top*
7)    Sprinkle with matcha powder or cocoa powder

*4) You can steam the milk using a steamer, or just bring it to near boiling.
*6) You may need a milk frother for this step.

Optional
•    Add vanilla essence, chocolate powder or mint essence
•    Sweeten with honey, manuka honey, stevia or brown sugar

Tea expert Rona Tison was on the Martha Stewart show recently, and she discussed the health benefits of green tea and showed different ways to prepare tea, including matcha. Because matcha is so beneficial for the cells, Rona mentioned that one of the health benefits of matcha is that the high level of antioxidants protects free radicals and thus protects the skin from damage. I am so glad matcha is getting the attention it deserves on shows like Martha Stewart, now we just need to demonstrate the benefits of organic matcha to people.

No artificial high nitrogen fertilizers, no herbicides and no presticides…only 100% USDA organic, clean, pure and delicious Living Qi Matcha!

Should you buy organic matcha? What makes organic matcha special?

To answer these important questions, let’s look first at a brief history of matcha green tea. Even though China is the mother of all tea culture, the Japanese have excelled in the high art of the tea ceremony and have put the unique stamp of their aesthetic insights and wisdom into the practice of tea. Tea connoisseurs and experts from around the world highly value Japanese teas for their quality, from the the attentiveness to farming conditions, to their tastes. While powdered green tea was developed and used in China more than a thousand years ago, the Japanese were really the first to cultivate and practice the art of powdered green tea, experimenting until they found a formula that really worked, the result was what they called matcha. Matcha was not only superior in taste, but in healing properties and also helped the monks to meditate longer and with more clarity and focus. It is interesting to note that a University of Colorado study in 2003 confirmed that matcha has 137 times the antioxidant EGCG compared to a typical green tea in a tea-bag.

It was the Zen Buddhists in Japan, the monks, who brought the tea plant from China to Japan and they were meticulous in their disciplined growing of tea. After the Chinese monks taught the Japanese how to use tea for meditation and healing, the Japanese refined the art and actually invented matcha. The are a few things that make matcha unique among other powdered green teas. The Japanese were the first to shade grow the tea plants, which drives valuable nutrients in the leaf and makes the leaves a deeper green.

Now, there are definitely small farmers in Japan and in other regions of the world making powdered green tea on farms that are not certified organic, and some of these teas are good. Obviously not everyone can grow USDA certified organic tea, but there is a problem with much of the commercial matcha out there. Some matcha on the market today is grown in polluted environments and the quality is questionable. Matcha is often produced cheaply and cut with cheap grades from China and then sold to consumers. We at the Living Qi company wanted to make sure that there were never any adulterants or heavy metals or pesticides in our matcha and that is why we only do business with small organic farms in Japan.

Also, matcha is often fertilized very heavily with synthetic nitrogen fertilizers. Heavy nitrogen fertilizing will make Matcha sweeter, but we believe the health characteristics of matcha grown in this way are altered. Organic matcha is produced with no artificial fertilizers, no herbicides and no pesticides.

By choosing certified organic matcha, you can rest assured that your matcha latte, or matcha recipe is free from anything that could harm your body. Just knowing your organic Living Qi matcha is safe and pure gives you a sense of calm and a peace of mind.

As a small business owner, I am extremely careful in what I sell and I only choose the highest quality organic matcha from Japan. I even had my good friend and pharmaceutical scientist, Anthony Wright at the University of Hawaii, take some of my matcha and run a lab analysis on it to make sure it was pure and clean…the result? We found out exactly what we knew all along: Living Qi organic matcha is free of any adulterants or heavy metals and is pure, clean, fresh and delicious!

I am not one for promoting panics, but a healthy dose of awareness is definitely in order as the nuclear situation unfolds in Japan. Recent analyses of wind and weather patterns suggest radiation fallout could reach the west coast of the US.

(update: there are no measurable levels of radiation anywhere near our organic matcha farms. You can still order our matcha and know it is safe and free of radiation.)

While we are seeing runs on local supplies of iodine in Asheville and in many US cities, what people need to be aware of is that there are certain foods and herbs that can help the body deal with radioactivity.

Dr. Lu Chih-hong, the president of the Sheng Te Tang Chinese Medical Hospital in Taiwan, suggests that people consume green tea to avoid the effects of radioactive fallout that may come from Japan. He also strongly recommends organic green tea.

As you know by now, our Living Qi organic matcha green tea has more nutrition in one cup than 10 cups of common green tea.

Many of the health benefits of matcha green tea: vitamin C, vitamin E, and catechins including EGCG may help people combat the effects of radiation.

According to Dr. Lu, Camellia sinensis, the plant that matcha green tea comes from, is a powerful substance that helps human bodies detoxify radiation contamination. Dr. Lu stated that research has shown that green tea can absorb as much as 90 percent of the radioisotopes in the human body and discharge it before it reaches the bone marrow.

Dr. Lu also said that Camellia sinensis assists the body in absorbing more vitamin C. By utilizing the nutrients in green tea more effectively, the possibility of getting Jod-Basedow syndrome, a hyperthyroid phenomenon one can acquire after taking potassium iodide to combat radiation poisoning, is reduced.

Iodine is a major component of seaweeds, so adding seaweed into the diet is also a good idea.

On April 17th, Monday, we will begin our annual spring 3 week detox and purification challenge and we should know more by then about how the radioactive situation in Japan is unfolding.

Some of the amazing health benefits of Living Qi matcha green tea are due to the fact that you are consuming the entire tea leaf when you drink it, thereby getting valuable nutrients and fiber that are often thrown out with a tea bag. Often the tea in tea bags is of questionable quality. Many times the leaf tips are used, which have low nutritional value and low levels of antioxidants. Living Qi matcha uses the fresh new tea leaves that appear in early spring. These early spring tea leaves are filled with vitamins, minerals, fatty acids, amino acids and even some protein. Plus, when you ingest the matcha you get the health benefits of fiber as well.

Using Matcha Green Tea to Create and Enhance Your Mood.

Matcha green tea is not only used for simple drinking, baking or making ice cream, matcha has more theanine in it than any other green tea in the world. Theanine is an amino acid with psychoactive properties. Research on theanine shows that it can help put the brain in alpha state, reduce stress and lower blood pressure. Matcha has a very relaxing affect on the central nervous system and can put the body in an easeful, peaceful and relaxed state. After drinking matcha, one feels as if they have meditated or practiced tai chi or yoga.

When the ancient Japanese monks discovered how to make matcha, they used it in their tea ceremonies and meditation rituals because they found that with matcha they could sustain their focus and energy for up to 8 hours at a time.

While there is some caffeine in matcha, the theanine acts as a natural balancer to the effects of caffeine. The caffeine provides increased mental acuity and focus, while the theanine provides relaxation and bodily calm.

the uses of Matcha, therefore are quite varied. We use matcha for daily drinking and for the deep calm, relaxation and increased focus it provides. It is indeed a valuable meditation aid.

Fifteen years of research in Chinese medicine, psychosomatic medicine, yoga and psychology has lead me to the conclusion:

“The mind is subtle body, the body is denser mind”

This idea is made clear by Candace Pert in her book “The Molecules of Emotion.” Pert, a NIH scientist for 20 years conscludes: “The body is the unconscious mind.” Our bodies then house all our old memories, repressed thoughts, numbed down feelings. Therapies like Acupuncture, that focus on releasing blockages in the bodymind, help restore us to our innate sense of peace and balance.

At the core of the energetic tradition of Acupuncture is the notion that the body is made for maximum enjoyment. Our tradition teaches that our physical impulses are not evil wrong or shameful, but are rather manifestations of the divine movement within form. We celebrate the body as existence itself, as the platform for our spiritual longings and as the temple for self-reflection and engagement with all life everywhere.

The Christian bible says we were created in God’s image and our self-image arises from our bodies. To illuminate the joy inherent within the body and revitalize our respect and appreciation for our lives as bones skin and blood, it is powerful to develop self compassion and self love.

An article yesterday in the New York Times reported that people who are very forgiving and tolerant of friends and families are often very hard on themselves. Are you hard on yourself? Can you learn to accept yourself right now as you are and take off the pressure? The New York Times article concluded that learning to love oneself and to practice self compassion is one of the healthiest things we can do.

Feel your body breathing right now. How do you feel? Are you tense? Are your muscles tight or sore? Is there pain in your body? I want to ask you a tremendously important question: Do you enjoy your body? Ask this deeply inside you heart and take time to explore the answers and emotions that arise. In working with patients I have found that there are numerous dissonant thoughts about the body that people carry around inside themselves. Among them are:

The body is bad
I am bad
I hate myself for feeling this way (angry, sad, anxious)
The body is selfish
The body is stupid and slow

In this form of inquiry, in this dialogue itself, the natural connection, the obvious singularity of the bodymind will be evident. This is extremely beneficial because the lamentable fact is that many people hate their bodies, they hate themselves and hate is one of the most energetically draining emotions there is. To help transform hate, simply realize hate is an incredibly powerful energy, let yourself feel it if it arises. In many cases hate is a VERY STRONG NO. Find out if you need to say no to more things in your life and you will unwind your hate and release it’s negative effects.

So to cultivate qi, to cultivate energy, of course the first principle must be to enjoy the body. You exist in the body, it is the home of your entire experience on earth, and you have the choice of either making it your sacred temple, the sacred vehicle of your journey here, or making it a miserable experience filled with low energy disease and lethargy.

Choosing self love, choosing self compassion and deciding to learn to speak to yourself in a loving, accepting way is a first step towards dynamic balance.

I have been doing a powerful meditation recently. Instead of asking myself what I want, or what I would like to attain, I ask myself what I can let go of. Can I let go of this old shirt I never wear? Can I let go of the thought “I am not good enough”? Whether old grudges or material things, simply asking yourself the question, “Can I let go of this” is powerful medicine, which gets me to the question of transforming fear.

To transform fear, it is necessary to first understand it and this takes wisdom and experience. First ask your self: Is this fear useful? Oftentimes fear is sharing some necessary information with us and to transform it, we need to first be quiet and listen to the message of our fear. Obviously, fear is often a friend telling us perhaps to slow down: the fear of speed. And this fear is necessary for the survival of the body. But many times we want to achieve something, get outside of comfort zones, and fear arises and we do not push through it to achieve something. Here are some tips on how to work with fear skillfully and with wisdom. Simply meditate on these thoughts and see if they are useful.

1. Simply breathe quietly when fear arises, feel fear in your body, ask your body and your sensation of fear what it has to teach you.

2. Meditate on the idea that the nature of fear is to seem larger than you, when you realize and align with the thought that you are much larger than fear, it often subsides.

3. Practice acting despite your fear. Recently, a mentor of mine died and I wish I had told him I loved and appreciated him. Practice facing your fear of being rejected and act in spite of it.

In Chinese medicine, fear is an essential and necessary part of evolution, it is the resistance to change that allows you to grow. Only when fear becomes chronic do we sense imbalance and ill health. We usually feel feel prior to big and wonderful breakthroughs in our lives, so embrace your fear as an indication that big and beautiful change is coming!

Morning Matcha Weight Loss Sundae

Living Qi Matcha Morning Weight-Loss Sundae Recipe (By Dr. Oz)

1. 1/2 cup low-fat Greek yogurt, or organic kefir

2. 1 banana

3.
1/2 cup strawberries

4. Unsweetened coconut

5.
Ground flaxseed to make it as thick as you want

6. Living Qi Matcha green tea powder, to taste

Mix up all the ingredients and enjoy. It will boost your metabolism and give you energy to start your day.

Besides eating his morning weight-loss sundae, Dr. Oz says you can break out of a weight-loss plateau by zigzagging your calories and eating your water.

To eat your water, eat water-rich foods. Women who eat these foods lose more weight. These are melon, fruits and vegetables, like watermelon and cantaloupe.

To zigzag your calories, you vary the amount of calories you eat every day. For example, on a 1,200 calorie diet, you eat 1,200 calories one day; 1,100 calories the next; and 1,300 calories the next.

This keeps your body from adapting to a set number of calories.
