I once heard integral philosopher Ken Wilber discuss a powerful combination of using Genpo Roshi’s Big Mind meditation with Holosync audio meditation technology developed by Bill Harris.  Wilber conveyed that combining the two techniques produced a very deep and profound meditative state. After I heard this I tried combining the two myself and experienced a deeply blissful and relaxed state of meditation.

We are going to use big words here like DESTINY, CALLING and MEANING. Do you believe you have a destiny in life? Do you have a calling? Do you find meaning and purpose in life? Simply put, if you don’t feel you have a purpose or calling then you are missing a deep and important source of joy in your life.

Central to traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is the notion that the Heart is the regulator of the entire human being. The meaning in our lives comes from a life lived in relationship to the Heart, aware of what creates peace within and aware of what creates disorder in one’s life. The result of a life lived in accordance with the destiny of the innermost heart is felt as joy. Joy is the emotion of the heart. If we see in a patient that there is no joy, then we must address the heart to understand why.

In fact joy is our natural birthright and a healthy life most definitely should be a joyful life. If you look at your life right now can you truly say that you are most often joyful? If not then it is an important part of healing to release what we call “little mind” and to experience once again, life as it is free of thought. After all, the only thing that suffers is your imagination right? Think about it for a moment. It is the story we tell ourselves in our minds that creates or dissolves our suffering.

Let me give you an example. Have you ever heard of Viktor Frankl? Viktor was imprisoned by the Nazis at the feared death-camp called Auschwitz during World War II. After watching his entire family be tortured and killed he finally decided that there was one thing his captors and killers could not take away from him…his soul and his will to live.

He decided then and there that if he survived he would use the remainder of his life to teach others that happiness is possible even under the most terrible circumstances. I highly recommend his book called “Man’s Search for Meaning.” Here is what Viktor had to say about his purpose:

“I had wanted simply to convey to the reader by way of concrete example that life holds a potential meaning under any conditions, even the most miserable ones. And I thought that if the point were demonstrated in a situation as extreme as that in a concentration camp, my book might gain a hearing. I therefore felt responsible for writing down what I had gone through, for I thought it might be helpful to people who are prone to despair.”

Now if Viktor Frankl can find meaning and joy in life after watching his entire family murdered, then perhaps we should analyze our own lives and see what bad attitudes we can let go of.

Dear Patients and Friends,

I have worked with hundreds of people over the years who have shared their profound frustration in trying to lose weight and keep it off. Fad diets come and go and many are downright dangerous. I have distilled some simple but powerful principles for losing weight below. Acupuncture is an incredibly simple and relaxing way to stimulate your body to lose weight, especially in the thighs and abdomen.

1. Build lean muscle more than do aerobic exercise.
•    Lean muscle is 5 times more metabolic than fat tissue.
•    Simple weight lifting exercises creates a metabolic furnace that burns fat 24 hours a day.
2. It’s not just what you eat, it’s when you eat it. (most people make the huge mistake of not eating all day, or eating lightly only to become extremely hungry later in the evening at which time they eat a large dinner, this is HUGE mistake and causes people to gain weight)
•    Understand the glycemic index of the foods you eat and eliminate fried, fatty, greasy and sugary foods (this is the what you eat)

•    Eat a good size breakfast, have snack, a decent lunch, have a snack, eat a smaller dinner, have a snack. (this is the when you eat)
3. Detoxify your liver and rid your body of excess acid.
•    Most people do not know that a toxic or stagnate liver can cause an immense backup of toxins that then get stored in fat cells. The creation of fat cells is often a defense mechanism that protects other cells from toxins; fat cells hold the toxins in a kind of hibernation until the liver is ready to deal with them.

•    As you detoxify your liver, you will automatically begin shedding fat because your liver will then have the ability to neutralize the toxins that have been stored in your fat cells.

4. Get more sleep.
•    Sleeping 6 hours a night raises your risk of developing obesity to 23%, sleeping 4 hours a night raises your risk of developing obesity to 73%.
•    Continuing research demonstrates that 8 hours really seems to be ideal for most people regardless of age or constitutional type.
•    During sleep, the body does cellular repair, and rids itself of stress hormones that cause fat tissue to accumulate.
5. Let stress go.
•    Realize that food acts as a stressor: Fatty foods, refined foods, coffee, tobacco and excess alcohol all cause adrenaline and cortisol to be released into the bloodstream and this in turn cause the body to break down lean muscle and to store fate.
•    Coffee causes stress by inducing the body to increase stress hormones.
•    Matcha green tea on the other hand causes the body to relax and the polyphenols in green tea help the body detoxify and burn fat.

Who chooses where you put your attention? Does the media? Your TV? The brands and billboards we see around us? I am going to wager that we can all take control of where we put our attention and that choice is incredibly powerful.

Will, when it is free, is the power to direct attention. Will is the sustain of attention as well. You decide on something, then you attain it by sustaining your attention on all the necessary steps it takes to get there.

Attention can simply observe the contents of the mind, this is a form of passive meditation. Meditation can also involve using intention or will to visualize or focus on something in particular, which is an active form of meditation. Creative visualization and manifestation techniques use this form of concentration.

The power of where you put your attention profoundly affects the quality of your life. What do you spend time thinking about on a day to day basis? Some consciousness researchers estimate that a good 90% of our daily thoughts are repetitious and based on old thought forms or images seen in the past. Understanding this, we can quickly realize why it is so important to continually expose yourself to uplifting thoughts, images and people.

One incredibly powerful way to increase the quality of your life is to take a week and document what goes on in your mind. Some people are surprised to see how much fear and negativity goes on in their thinking. This is a normal process. Over time, these thoughts that seem so troublesome will loosen their grip on you as they are exposed to your awareness.

Please take 100% responsibility for your health…but a coach helps.

Sounds simple doesn’t it? But how many of use TRULY take 100% responsibility for everything in our lives without at least a partial distribution of the blame? Your health? Yep…100% your responsibility…right now. Now, this does not mean things will never happen to you that would cause poor health. You might be exposed to chemicals in the environment for example, but starting now…starting right where you are, wherever you are reading this right NOW…you’re in full control to make the decisions you need to make the move towards optimal health. And it all starts with the CHOICE, which is the DECISION to TAKE ACTION.

As a practitioner of Acupuncture and Chinese medicine, I like to tell the story of the ancient days in China when physicians were required to keep the population healthy. In fact, if doctors could not teach people to stay well and prevent disease then they were fired! This was quite a different system than what we have today which is built on illness. Can you imagine if the pharmaceutical companies put even a fraction of their billion dollar budgets to work preventing the illnesses that they create expensive drugs for?

The ancient Chinese tribes, where much of modern Chinese medicine originated were communities based on wellness. Sure they had healers that administered to the ill. But the people in those communities were taught from an early age how to achieve wellness. They were taught what plants were poisonous or difficult to digest and what foods to combine during meals as well as what foods to not combine so as to enhance digestion. They were taught exercises like Tai Chi and Qi Gong.

The best doctors and healers today are those that act as life coaches and teach patients how to care for themselves and how to be well.

Regardless of how bad your health may seem, by taking responsibility and not depending only on drugs, surgery or your doctor to save you, you can make the DECISION to get well. So, stop right now, take a deep breath…and ask yourself…are you ready? Are you really ready to TAKE ACTION to be well?

Some people will suffer incredibly so they don’t have to change a thing. Some people will live miserable lives toiling all day everyday with low energy, lethargy and depression in order not to try something new. I want to share with you an understanding that I have been deeply focusing on in my life for the past few years. Recently many people coming in for healing at my clinic have been reporting that they are experiencing very rapid changes in their lives. I hear tales of electronics breaking down, cars needing repair, old thought forms becoming obvious, shadows needing to be dealt with, and relationships suddenly ending. It sure feels as though rapid change is upon us.

I am sending out a call in these rapidly changing times for each of us to reflect deeply on our highest mission in life, our calling, and to walk the talk.

Are you called to help the growing environmental problems we face? Walk the talk. Are you called to help assist people in their personal evolution? Walk the talk. Are you called to teach or be a great parent? Walk the talk.

In any field, in any facet of life, we can make our own unique contribution by speaking our inner truth. What have you realized in your spiritual life and are you living that truth on a daily basis? What is the deepest understanding you have achieved in life? Are you living that by acting on it?

If you are having trouble knowing what your purpose in life is, spend some time this weekend thinking about three fundamental questions:

1. Who am I?
2. Why am I here?
3. What am I doing about it?

Are you sharing your passion with the world? Are you sharing your unique gifts? The world won’t wait forever. Jump in and feel the profound inner strength that comes from knowing who you are and what you stand for.

Through the grace of God the purpose of my life is to serve all that I am blessed to serve by living wonder, integrity, compassion, humor and joy.

A young Native American with a notoriously bad attitude was once taken into the desert by a wisdom teacher who would soon become his mentor. This wise old medicine woman could see that the young man was falling into the abyss of drug abuse, self hatred and self destruction. She had the young man create a circle of stones about 6 feet in diameter. She then told him to stand inside the center of the circle. Over the next hour she walked him through each direction, north, east, south, west, and explained the beings, both internal and external that the young man would meet as he faced outward to the world.

“But notice something”, she said, “no matter which direction you face, or who you are facing, you are always first and foremost in relationship with yourself, you can turn to face every new direction, but you are always still standing inside the circle of your own being. This is why the most important thing in life is to develop a healthy relationship to your self. As you love yourself first, then you are able to give love and respect to all beings. Self hatred is the cause of hatred of others.”

That young man went on to become a widely respected Artist, Author and Wisdom teacher in his own right. His name is Hyemeyohsts Storm.

Meditation can be an extremely powerful tool for peering into the world of your inner thoughts and understanding how we talk to ourselves inside our minds. As you may know we are constantly running thoughts, images and even songs through our minds (who has not been crazily annoyed by a wayward song on the brain?).

One of the purposes of meditation is to clearly see this “internal dialogue” and to asses whether your thoughts and inner feelings are benefiting you and your life or stifling your possibilities. Imagine being able to immediately notice that annoying song you can’t stop singing and replace it with a positive affirmation or even a peaceful silence. Such is the power of meditation.

Many ancient cultures have the saying “the mind makes the human.” And “As you think so you are.”

Think about this deeply for the day, observe how you talk to yourself in your mind. See if you can be your own best coach inside your head. I have found that I need to be extremely diligent and observant of my mind to see through old patterns and conditioning.

One of the things that has been tremendously helpful to me is taking an integrated approach to health. When I am in great shape, walking everyday and lifting weights, my meditation gets very deep and a natural confidence and positivity arise effortlessly. My qigong practice then also deepens and I feel full of energy love and compassion for myself and others.

One thing is for sure, being your own best coach requires you to take action and to believe you can get back in control of your life especially if you are feeling depressed, anxious or overwhelmed. But the rewards for that action will be deeper peace, satisfaction and confidence.

Developing you inner coach means being your own best friend, pushing yourself to persist in the face of difficulties, and daring to dream big and live your dreams. Think of one thing you would love to do or achieve in this lifetime and use the voice of the inner coach to begin plotting your way to get there…the journey is what you make it and your inner voice will determine what you can achieve.

Thoughts run through the mind, all the time.  Consider observing them, as they arise.  Watch your mind, and see how some thoughts are benefiting you, and how some are doing you harm. For example, a negative thought can immediately cause stress hormones to be released into the bloodstream. In the ancient traditions, it was said, “the mind makes the human.” If you think of the mind as a garden, then you will know that the garden of the mind needs to be weeded. Weeding the garden of the mind means seeing our negative thoughts clearly, and over time, replacing them with more productive and fruitful thoughts that are in alignment with our goals and dreams. By taking time to observe your mind, you can notice the patterns of your internal dialogue, or how you talk to yourself, mentally.

We wrote a newsletter recently called “Be Your Own Best Coach”, and we described the process by which you can learn to talk to yourself, in such a way as to enable yourself to achieve your dreams and goals. Start small, with one negative thought, in any area of your life: family, finances, relationships, hobbies, self-care. Notice a thought pattern that does not serve you, and make an affirmation to replace the negative thought. For instance, if you have trouble creating abundance and financial independence, you may have an underlying thought like: “money is the root of all evil.” You could replace that thought with “Abundance is ever present in me, and I use my abundance and money to serve the world.”

Again, all you need to do is choose one negative thought from the garden of the mind, and plant the seed for a new thought-form to emerge.  You will be amazed at the results.

Quick Summer Recipe: Organic Matcha Lemonade
1.    Whisk up 4-5 grams of Living Qi organic matcha into 5 cups warm water.
2.    Add organic agave syrup or organic stevia and sweeten to taste.
3.    Pack a pitcher with ice.

These 7 actions can quickly increase your energy and change your mental state from negative to positive:

1. Take 15 deep breaths

I have been recently experimenting with deeper hydration and I can attest that drinking much more water than you thought possible has an amazing energizing effect. The body’s hydro-electric system and circulatory system will love you for it. When I wake up I drink at least 5 glasses on an empty stomach and I have much more energy for my 5 mile jog/walk than when I do not do this. I learned this from an amazing book called: Your Body’s Many Cries For Water. This is hard to get used to and some patients tell me that they cannot get down more than one glass, but it takes some practice.

3. Walk Briskly for 10 minutes

Even just a short 10 minute walk can completely change your mental state, get your blood pumping and increase your energy. The results are even better if you can get into nature.

4. Tell someone you love them
